artist's statement

These drawings represent a body of about 80 pieces done in the last two years of my life.

Each of the pieces was executed on a 5 x 7 inch piece of high quality Bristol board using a 0.38mm thick line of either ink or 4B pencil.

The pieces speak about many things to me; They talk about constraint, both of body, but especially of spirit. I live in a terribly cramped place. My body is constrained by this tiny space, and I can not use my arms and my shoulders and my hips and my feet for any purpose in my work other than as a stabilizing platform for my right hand and wrist. The works are an attempt to cope with these physical constraints. They are tiny works executed in a tiny space with very small, tightly controlled moves. My spirit too is constrained, desperate for understanding and expression, these drawings are an attempt to talk about these limitations, how it feels to be cramped and bound, yet struggling to break free.

These works are heavily influenced by Jean Giraud, Geiger, Miyazaki, and many others. These lines have been in my life since I was a teenager, but have only very recently become a true vessel with which I can communicate the facts of my life and my experiences.

More than anything, these drawings are, to me, a tentative but passionate expression of hope and redemption as their making is a testament to my desire to create something beautiful in the face of all else.

I hope you like them.
